Naim Fraim Base

Fraim is Naim's reference modular equipment-support system. The base level forms the foundation of each Fraim stack, using two veneered composite platforms and a sequence of minimal-contact interfaces to separate the equipment support surface from the floor.

The upper platform carries three hardened-steel balls, which support the supplied 10mm toughened-glass sub-shelf at three points. The electronics rest on this glass surface, while the lower part of the base terminates in three adjustable stainless-steel floor spikes.

The Foundation of Every Fraim Stack

A Fraim rack is built from one base level plus the number and height of additional shelf levels required by the system. The base cannot be omitted or replaced by a normal Fraim shelf because it contains the dedicated floor interface and double-layer foundation.

The base itself provides one support position on its glass sub-shelf. A simple one-component installation can therefore use the base alone, while larger systems add individual Fraim levels above it. Each separately purchased level introduces its own cup-and-cone interface and glass support.

One Base Is Required Per Stack

A twin-stack arrangement uses two independent Fraim bases. Do not try to bridge normal Fraim levels between stacks or place a second tower on the same base. Plan each stack separately, including its loaded weight, cable access and required shelf heights.

Double-Layer Three-Point Construction

The Fraim Base uses two shaped, 19mm double-veneered composite platforms connected by purpose-made steel hardware. Rather than presenting broad contact areas between every part, it uses successive three-point interfaces intended to control the transfer of mechanical energy through the structure.

Three adjustable stainless-steel spikes define the contact with the floor. Above them, hardened-steel cups and cones create minimal-contact junctions within the base. This establishes a rigid reference plane while limiting the contact paths through which vibration can reach the supported equipment.

Decoupled Toughened-Glass Support

The equipment does not sit directly on the veneered platform. A 452 x 340mm glass sub-shelf rests on three chrome-plated hardened-steel balls located in matching sockets, creating another minimal-contact interface between the Fraim structure and the component.

Naim specifies 10mm toughened glass compliant with BS6206 Class A. The glass must be handled carefully and used only for its intended purpose. A shelf that becomes chipped, cracked or broken must be replaced with the correct Naim-specified part rather than ordinary cut glass.

Current Finish Choices

Audio T currently offers the Fraim Base in Black, Cherry, Cherry Tint and Natural Ash. Cherry Tint is the darker of the two cherry treatments, while Natural Ash and the untinted Cherry option retain a lighter appearance. Black provides the most visually discreet platform finish.

The shelves use real wood veneer, so grain pattern and tone naturally vary from one example to another. When expanding the rack, match the selected platform finish and choose either natural or black anodised uprights for the separately purchased levels.

Finish and Upright Colour Are Separate Choices

This base listing presents the four platform finishes. Standard, medium and tall Fraim levels are offered separately with their own platform and upright-colour combinations. Check the exact finish description on every level when building or extending a matching rack.

Choosing Additional Level Heights

Fraim levels are available in standard, medium and tall configurations. The published clear height is 105mm for a standard level, 180mm for a medium level and 254mm for a tall level. Allow extra space for ventilation, rear connectors and cables rather than choosing solely from the chassis height.

The corresponding total level heights, including the glass shelf, are 175mm, 250mm and 324mm. The base level has a published height of 155mm including its glass shelf. Mixed-height configurations are possible, but the complete rack plan should be checked before ordering.

Naim permits up to six levels above a base when standard or medium uprights are used. A configuration using tall uprights is limited to two levels above the base. Ask Audio T to confirm the permitted arrangement if different upright heights will be combined in one stack.

Load Limits and Floor Requirements

Naim states a maximum safe load of 50kg on each shelf, evenly distributed, and a maximum load of 90kg for any single Fraim or FraimLite assembly. The total rack design must satisfy both limits; adding more levels does not increase the 90kg assembly limit.

The base itself weighs 8.6kg before equipment and extra levels are added. Confirm that the floor and its underlying structure can support the complete installation. This is especially important for tall systems, heavy power amplifiers and racks positioned on suspended timber floors.

The three spikes are sharp and concentrate the load into small contact points. Optional floor-protection chips should be used where direct spike contact could damage wood, tile or another finished surface. Ensure any protector is stable and correctly located beneath the spike.

Assembly and Levelling

Fraim is supplied in component form and must be assembled in the sequence shown in Naim's instructions. All cups, cones, balls, sockets, studs, nuts and spikes must face the correct way, and the structure must be level before the glass and equipment are installed.

Assemble the rack close to its final position on a clean, protected surface. Handle veneered and metal parts carefully to avoid cosmetic damage, and keep the glass away from hard or pointed objects. Do not drag a loaded rack across the floor or use any part of the structure as a step or seat.

Correct mechanical tension and alignment matter to both safety and stability. Audio T can assemble and configure the stand, plan the order of components and check that power and signal cables have sufficient clearance without pulling against the equipment.

System Layout and Cable Planning

Place heavier components low in the stack where practical, while still following the ventilation requirements in each product manual. Power supplies and large power amplifiers can generate magnetic fields, so shelf spacing and the use of more than one stack may help separate them from sensitive source and pre-amplifier components.

Check cable lengths before finalising the shelf order. Naim Burndy and SNAIC leads should reach their sockets naturally without being stretched, tightly bent or pressed against the rack. Leave space behind the Fraim for connectors and for safe access to mains switches.

Fraim and FraimLite

Fraim and FraimLite share the same overall footprint and modular concept, but their isolation structures are not identical. Full Fraim uses a double-layer base and ball-supported glass sub-shelves. FraimLite uses a simpler single-layer base and normally supports equipment directly on its veneered shelves.

Naim describes an upgrade path that allows Fraim and FraimLite levels to be combined, but the appearance, parts and support arrangement differ. Ask Audio T to plan any mixed installation rather than assuming that every component is identical or that a Fraim Base converts all FraimLite levels into full Fraim shelves.

Care and Maintenance

Dust veneered and metal surfaces with a clean, soft cloth. Clean the glass with a damp cloth or chamois, using a little washing-up liquid or soft soap if required. Do not use abrasive powders or cleaners, and do not strike the glass with hard or pointed objects.

Avoid placing very hot or very cold items directly against the glass. Periodically check that the rack remains level and stable, particularly after it has been moved or the system configuration has changed. Unload the rack before adjustments that affect the spikes or structural fasteners.
